Hello New York!
Taking a trip into the city during the summer is a MUST for us. Thankfully, Jim has off and could serve as the supper daddy/pack mule/toddler chaser for the day ;) I was very glad to be able to enjoy the weather (90 degrees isn't that hot) and get some exercise (no puffy feet, even after a looong day of city walking).
I had won tickets to the Jewish Museum from WNYC a few months ago, and the Warhol exhibit there is only going on for another few weeks. So we decided to begin the day in Central Park at the Heckscher Playground. It's on the south end (closest to walk to from the 33rd PATH station) and has a neat water-sprinkler part. We packed one swim diaper for T (had him in paper diapers the rest of the day-- you can fit 6 in a small diaper bag, unlike 2 cloth dipes!) Not many kids out in the play area, as it was wicked hot. But lots cooling off in the free water!
The museum was on 92nd and 5th, so after we left, we headed a few blocks over to the northern end of Central Park. We haven't explored this area much. Behind us is the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. It is huge! Makes for a nice backdrop for some pictures, right?
Upon exiting the subway, we found the Empire State Building to be right behind us. Trenton likes looking at the tall buildings in the city... he tells us "That's where George lives"... ha! Above, Jim holds T on his head in the very bottom of this picture. Darn back-light!
And then it was back on the PATH to Hoboken. T loves holding on to the poles and sitting in the seats (when they are available). We didn't want to leave 'Boken right away, as we'd be sitting in traffic. So we headed over to Church Square Park. There were lots of things to climb on and yet another sprinkler area (this time it was a regular diaper) to cool down in. Below, T plays with the pirate ship. He is really into pirates (could it be because of the Tina Fey Sesame Street pirate skit?? They pretend to be 'book-aneers').
Last stop-- dinner at La Isla. I think I've blogged it before, but it is worth mentioning that this is one of the best places we've found with great food and a good price. T loved dancing to the Cuban music and eating these fried plantains ("Just like George!")
P.S. The big funny of the day... as we were driving home we passed Newark Airport on the Turnpike. Jim and T were talking about the giant airplanes that were taking off and landing nearby. "That airplane is huge!" cried Trenton, "Just like Mommy's belly!" Niiiice!

the pirate fascination came from reading this book from the library:
