How Did We Live Before the Internet?

Do you ever ask yourself that question? Ten years ago, I don't remember email being a big thing at all. Even looking over my high school yearbook, not one person put in an email address to keep in touch with (although one did include his pager number!) And as a freshman in college, I remember hand writing out papers before I got a computer of my own!

Now, I'm on the computer at least twice a day. I am taking a class online this semester. I'd say I receive about half of my news information from the net, about half from the TV, and a bit from NPR on the radio (if we happen to drive around that day and T is in a good mood). So look at all the cool stuff I can read about!

Here's an article from the New York Times website. It is about Harvey Karp's new endeavors with toddler behavior.

We really enjoyed his insight for infant soothing and it worked well when Trenton was a baby. I've read a bit about his 'caveman approach' and although I haven't tried it out yet, it seems a bit more far-fetched than what I'm used to. We'll see!

The second one was sent to me from my cousin via her moms group. It shows a clip from the seventies Sesame Street. In it, Big Bird is asking a mother about nursing her baby. It was interesting to read some of the comments left on the page. Could something like this fly on PBS nowadays? Probably not. But I do think that mothers nursing babies is on the rise again.

And finally, if you haven't seen it already, here's one of Trenton's favorites. The fact that he gets the joke is hysterical. Shows how smart he really is ;)

Have a great day! We are off to take pictures at the mall. He has a bit of a runny nose (same thing when we did this last year!) but is willing to use a tissue, thankfully.

Isn't that funny!?! I remember my best friend getting an email address in 10th grade... I think it was Prodigy? There was only one other person in our class with it, so she and he could email and that was it. lol. I did email some freshman year of college through the school (I didn't have my own computer either). But really we only had it in case professors needed to email us assignments. Our kids are going to think landline phones are "ancient"... we are so old, huh?

The internet really started to take shape in my last couple years of high school (~'98-'00) but I even remember using it very sparingly in 8th grade in 1996. I used it for a few research projects in high school (but with NONE of the 'internet skills' we all have for researching these days). My freshman year of college (2000-01) saw the rise of Napster and other online resources, and email started to become a widespread tool.

Some random things I do these days that would have seemed impossible ten/twelve years ago:

- watching LOST episodes (I have bowling on Thursday nights now :-P)
- playing fantasy football etc.
- renting and (legally) downloading movies! Netflix!!
- watching EVERY yankee game on mlb.tv
- instant messaging
- learning about ANYthing i want to on wikipedia and other sites
- getting instant updates of sports scores
- paying bills
- buying books/DVDs

Oh yeah, and reading your blog :-) Good post!
